About Time is a movie that is literally about time. Making the best of time, and knowing when to accept that time has finally run out.
Domhnall Gleeson plays Tim, a man who learns at age 21 that all the men in his family are able to travel back along their own timelines. He learns this from his father, played by Bill Nighy, who shows him the ropes of time travel and guides him through the struggles Tim faces.
The film deals with serious issues -- toxic relationships, alcoholism, depression, illness, death -- in ways that are, if not lighthearted, then unflinchingly optimistic. It accepts the limitations of time and works within them, and works within the limitations of life's own serendipity. The film assures the viewers that life isn't, and could never be, unfailingly perfect. What matters is embracing each moment as if it were the very last -- what matters is understanding the value of each day, and the value of the people we live each day with.
